NATIONAL DANCES OF SERBIA

Folklore

Serbian Folk Dancing is an old traditional Serbian culture. Folklore is a general name for an art passed from one generation to another since ancient times, depicts spiritual and cultural heritage of Serbia. Serbia has traditional clothing which is worn when dancing Serbian folklore. Typical form of Serbian folk dances is “kolo”, the circle dance is performed amongst groups of people (usually several dozen) holding each other's hands or having their hands around each other's waists (ideally in a circle, hence the name). There is almost no movement above the waist. The basic steps are easy to learn, but experienced dancers dance ‘kolo’ with great virtuosity due to different ornamental elements they add, such as syncopated steps. Both men and women dance together, however some dances require only men to dance and some dances are only for women.

The traditional dress of Serbia was mostly made of woolen fabric, while some were used to prepare with Linen and Silk. Serbian folk dance differs from the music. An interesting fact about Serbian folk dancing is that every folk dance is various to the music, rhythm and how you are going to perform it.

TRADITIONAL MUSIC OF NORTHERN SERBIA

Vojvodina

The traditional music of Vojvodina forms a kind of continuum with the folk music of Romania in the east, the folk music of Hungary in the north, the folk music of Slavonia (Croatia) in the west, and the folk music of Central Serbia in the south. Traditional music of Vojvodina is to a large extent associated with small tamburitza (tamburica) and string orchestras. The format of orchestra varies; in the most common form, it usually has one or two tamburitzas, a violin, a guitar and a contrabass; sometimes it also includes an accordion. Legendary “starogradske” (“old city songs”, traditional genre of music), ballads and chansons were born with a bottle of good wine and delicious specialties of Serbian cuisine.

Pop and rock music appeared in the fifties of the 20th century, while it gained popularity in the eighties.

Beauties of Serbia

"He who sings, thinks no evil” is an old Serbian saying that will describe our attitude towards music in the best possible way. Roots of traditional Serbia folk dance music can be traced through the centuries, while the history of classical music in Serbia is quite short, dating from the mid 19th century..

The national folklore dance in Serbia is “kolo“. It differs from one region to another, and the most famous are “Užičko kolo” and “Moravac“ of these two videos. Popular music in Serbia was born in “kafanas” (traditional taverns)."
